FLorida’s Space Coast Bioluminescence Forecast
The Indian River Lagoon is one of the few places on earth where bioluminescent kayaking is reliable rather than lucky. This forecast scores tonight and the next thirteen nights out of ten, using the moon’s exact position over the lagoon, live water temperature from the NOAA station at Port Canaveral, and the National Weather Service sky forecast.
Will the lagoon glow tonight?
Four things decide it, and the forecast above works out all four: whether the moon is above the horizon while you would be on the water, which organism is active this time of year, how warm the water is, and what the sky and wind are doing.
Scores run 0 to 10. Anything above 8.5 is a night worth rearranging plans for. Between 7 and 8.5 is an excellent trip. Above 5 is worth going. Below 3, save your money.

Two seasons, two different organisms
There are two bioluminescence seasons on the lagoon, and they look nothing alike.
Summer: dinoflagellates (late May to early October)
The glow comes from single-celled plankton, mostly Pyrodinium bahamense, that flash a hard electric blue whenever the water around them moves. They bloom densest when the lagoon is warmest, which is why July and August are the brightest weeks of the year. This is the sparkler version. Sharp, bright, fireworks under the paddle. Drag a hand through the water and it lights up. A mullet spooks under the kayak and leaves a comet trail.
Winter: comb jellies (November to early March)
Once the water cools the dinoflagellates die back, and comb jellies take over. They are clear, walnut-sized animals with eight rows of beating cilia, and they glow when they are disturbed. No stingers, so guides routinely scoop them up and pass them around the group. Their light is slower and softer, more lantern than firework. December and January are the peak.
The dead weeks: April to mid-May
The comb jellies have thinned out and the water has not warmed enough for the summer bloom. The forecast above shows these weeks honestly instead of pretending a new moon can rescue them. If April is the only time you can travel, go to the beach and come back in July.

Why moonset matters more than moon phase
The moon is the biggest single variable, and phase is only a proxy for what actually matters: whether the moon is above the horizon while you are out there.
Here is the case that makes it obvious. A last quarter moon is half lit, which sounds bad, but it does not rise until roughly 1 AM. A 9:30 PM launch is in complete darkness. A first quarter moon is also half lit and sits high overhead all evening, which is far worse. Same illumination, opposite result.
This is why the forecast shows a dark window: the specific hours tonight when the sky is fully dark and the moon is down. On plenty of nights that window is real even when the phase looks unpromising, and knowing it is the difference between a good trip and a wasted one. It is also why a mediocre-looking week can hide one genuinely excellent night.
Where to launch, from Titusville to Cocoa Beach
- Banana River — Cape Canaveral and Merritt Island. Calm, sheltered, and the shortest drive from Cocoa Beach. Most Banana River trips put in on the Merritt Island side near Kelly Park East, at the foot of the SR‑528 causeway. This is the easiest water on the Space Coast and the usual choice for a first time or with kids along. Sykes Creek and Newfound Harbor, also on Merritt Island, hold glow on calm nights.
- Indian River — Titusville. Wide open and good for larger groups, minutes from Kennedy Space Center if you are stacking a paddle with a launch viewing. Port St. John and Cocoa are a short drive south.
- Haulover Canal and Mosquito Lagoon. The darkest of the three. It sits between the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore, so there is almost no light pollution in any direction, and on a clear new-moon night the contrast is the best on the coast. Reached from Titusville to the south or New Smyrna Beach to the north, near Playalinda Beach.
All three sit within about 25 minutes of Cocoa Beach. Licensed outfitters run guided clear-kayak tours from each, including BK Adventure and A Day Away Kayak Tours. How the Glow Score is calculated
Four inputs, two of them live:
- Lunar position. Moon illumination and altitude computed for the lagoon at 28.65°N, 80.78°W, averaged across the dark window rather than sampled at a single moment. This is what produces the moonset time and the dark window length.
- Seasonal organism activity. Separate curves for dinoflagellates and comb jellies. Each is scored on its own scale, because a peak comb jelly night and a peak July night are both excellent and they are not the same experience.
- Water temperature. Live from NOAA CO-OPS station 8721604 at Trident Pier, Port Canaveral. Warm water drives the summer bloom, cool water brings the comb jellies in.
- Cloud cover, wind and rain. Live from the National Weather Service Melbourne office. Cloud is treated as a benefit when the moon is up, because clouds block moonlight. Wind above about 12 mph and heavy rain both cut the score.
National Weather Service data runs about seven days out, so nights 8 to 14 are marked outlook. The moon and season figures are still exact, but in place of a real forecast they assume the coming week’s average sky. That keeps them comparable to nights 1 to 7 rather than flattering them.
The honest limitation: nobody measures plankton density in the lagoon in real time. Water clarity, local blooms and which cove your guide picks all matter, and none of them are forecastable. Use the Glow Score to choose which night to go, and still call the outfitter that afternoon.
What actually ruins a bioluminescence trip
- A moon that is up. The single biggest factor, and the one most people get wrong by checking phase instead of moonset.
- Wind. Above roughly 12 mph the surface chops up and you lose the glowing trails. Calm, flat water is what makes the effect legible.
- Rain. Heavy rain dilutes the surface layer, and storms get tours cancelled outright. Check the forecast the afternoon of.
- Your own phone. Night vision takes about 20 minutes to build and one notification to destroy. Screens off once you are on the water.
- Going too early. Full dark on the Space Coast is roughly 45 to 90 minutes after sunset depending on the season. The dark window in the forecast tells you exactly when.

What is the best month to see bioluminescence in Florida?
July and August are the brightest months for bioluminescent dinoflagellates in the Indian River Lagoon, when water temperature peaks and the plankton bloom is densest. June and September are nearly as good and less crowded. From November through early March the dinoflagellates are gone but bioluminescent comb jellies take their place, producing a softer, lantern-like glow. April and early May are the weakest weeks of the year, when neither organism is active.
Do you need a new moon to see bioluminescence?
No, but you need a dark sky, and the moon is the main thing that ruins it. What matters is not the moon phase itself but whether the moon is above the horizon while you are on the water. A last quarter moon does not rise until after midnight, so a 9 PM paddle is completely dark. A first quarter moon is high in the sky all evening and washes the glow out. The week either side of a new moon is the safest bet because the moon is both dim and near the sun in the sky.
Where is the best place to see bioluminescence on the Space Coast?
The three established launch areas are the Banana River near Cape Canaveral, which is calm and sheltered and best for first-timers; the Indian River near Titusville; and Mosquito Lagoon at Haulover Canal, which is the darkest of the three because it sits inside Canaveral National Seashore with almost no light pollution. All three are within about 25 minutes of Cocoa Beach.
Can you see bioluminescence from Cocoa Beach?
Not from the ocean side. The glow happens in the Indian River Lagoon system on the west side of the barrier island, meaning the Banana River, the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon, not on the Atlantic beach. From Cocoa Beach the nearest launch is the Banana River off Merritt Island, about 15 minutes away. That holds across the Space Coast generally: the beach towns are where you stay, and the lagoon a few minutes inland is where you paddle.
What water temperature do you need for bioluminescence?
Bioluminescent dinoflagellates in the Indian River Lagoon bloom densest when water temperature is above about 80°F, which typically runs from June through September. Below roughly 72°F the summer bloom collapses and the glow effectively stops. Comb jellies are the opposite: they concentrate in the lagoon in cooler water through the winter. Does cloud cover ruin bioluminescence?
Usually the opposite. Clouds block moonlight, so on a night with a bright moon a heavy overcast can actually make the water appear to glow more. What genuinely hurts is wind and rain: wind above about 12 mph chops the surface so you cannot see glowing trails clearly, and heavy rain dilutes the surface layer and often cancels tours outright.

How accurate is a bioluminescence forecast?
The astronomical part is exact: moon phase, moonrise and moonset times can be computed years in advance. The weather part is reliable about seven days out and is drawn from the National Weather Service. The biological part is the uncertain one, because plankton density varies from cove to cove and week to week, and no one measures it in real time. Treat a Glow Score as a strong planning signal for choosing a date, not a guarantee of what any single night will look like, and check with your tour operator before you drive out.
